What is Reiki ?

Essentially, “Reiki” (the proper Japanese pronunciation is somewhere between “Ray- Key” and “Lay-Key”) is a term used to refer to a system of healing and self- development created by Mikao Usui (respectfully referred to as: Usui-Sensei) in Japan in the early part of the 20th Century. While commonly referred to simply as “Reiki” or “Reiki Therapy”, the system of healing and self development is more formally called “Usui Reiki Ryoho” – that is: “Usui Reiki Healing Method” or “Usui Reiki Treatment”

Reiki Therapy was introduced to the West under the title: Usui Shiki Ryoho (Usui-style Healing Method/Treatment).

At different times, various expressions of the system have been known as:
Usui Do (the ‘Do’ refers to a spiritual or philosophical ‘path’, or ‘way’) Usui Teate (‘Teate’ – means ‘treatment’, ‘therapy’ or ‘hand-healing’ ). And Usui Reiho (Spiritual Method) [some people seem to think Reiho is a contraction of ‘Reiki Ryoho’]

Simply stated, Reiki Therapy can be said to be a synergistic combination of ‘spiritual healing’ and ‘energy healing’ techniques, and self-developmental practices. While the system has been influenced by spiritual and therapeutic discipline, practice and ideals found within Shinto, Buddhism (and possibly Taoism), Reiki itself has no specific religious affiliation.

Reiki – a generic term

Of latter years, however, the word Reiki has, it seems, achieved generic status. Much as the word: Biro has, in many places, come to mean any ball-point pen, or: Hoover is used to refer to the vacuum cleaner in general – no matter what particular form or style or manufacturer – so, the word: Reiki has (erroneously), at various times, been applied to all manner of forms of energetic healing. It has been used to refer to the hands-on practices of certain South American Shamans, to forms of western Spiritualist Healing, to high-level Chinese Chi Gung healing practices (and has even been cited by some as the means used by Jesus, Buddha, and many other religious figures to enact healing miracles). Admittedly, many people – having undergone Reiki training – have taken the essential phenomenon that is at the very core of Reiki Therapy and successfully integrated it into various spiritual, cultural and esoteric belief-systems and practices. This has resulted in the manifestation of numerous viable and effective new styles of Reiki, or what at least may be referred to as Reiki- derived or Reiki-influenced, therapeutic modalities and systems of personal development.

Reiki – Energetic RadianceHowever, technically, the term Reiki is properly solely used to indicate the therapeutic and self development system created by Mikao Usui (or, as he is often respectfully referred to as: Usui- Sensei). More specifically, the name Reiki identifies the wonderful therapeutic energy radiance, or phenomenon, which lies at the heart of this natural healing system.
The Rei part of the name is often translated as Universal* and in essence, it refers to something Spiritual or Sacred, and can mean Soul. Ki, is often translated simply as Life-Force Energy, yet also implies Spiritedness or Feelings. Thus, depending on ones perspective, Reiki can be understood as: Universal* Life-force Energy, Spiritually- influenced Life-force Energy, or even as Charismatic Healing Radiance. Universal in this sense, originally being a contraction of: the Universal – an alternative (and intentionally less religious) term for the Divine, Numinous, God. Reiki – a gentle therapy.Reiki is a gentle, yet profound, non-invasive therapy, which can facilitate stress- reduction and relaxation, support effective immune-system function, enhance the body’s self-healing mechanisms, and replenish and nurture vitality.Reiki can be effectively used in combination with other therapies – both allopathic and alternative – and has been shown to effective stimulate the relaxation response. Rather than acting solely on a physical level, Reiki is holistic in its effect – eliciting a healing response across the entire spectrum of ones being – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. It can prove beneficial in the resolving of physical disorders, nervous conditions and emotional issues, and help nurture a greater sense of balance, well-being, and wholeness in ones life. The gentle Reiki phenomenon has no negative side effects, and does not require any concentration on the part of the client. The Reiki PrinciplesCentral to the Reiki system of wellness and self-development, is a set of 5 guiding Principles or Precepts – referred to in Japanese as the Gokai. These principles – affirmed morning and night, and kept in ones thoughts throughout ones daily activities – are intended to assist in transforming ones attitude to life, and bring the soul/self into balance, enabling one to respond with compassion in all situations. There are many slightly different translations of the Reiki Gokai, yet they all express the same sentiment.“The secret method of inviting blessings, the spiritual medicine of many illnesses: Just for today …
(1,) Do not rise to anger
(2,) Do not succumb to worry
(3,) Express Gratitude for all your blessings
(4,) Apply yourself diligently
(5,) Manifest compassion to all beingsMornings and evenings sit in the prayer position and repeat these words out loud and in your heart, for the improvement of body and soul… “Reiki – Receiving TreatmentThe person receiving Reiki treatment remains fully clothed, and sits on a chair, or reclines on a therapy couch – whichever is most comfortable. The only participation required is a desire to let oneself relax and be open to the positive effects of the Reiki healing energy.
In its simplest form, treatment is given primarily by means of a structured series of touch-based interventions at specific points on the body (- a process sometimes referred to as laying on of hands). The Reiki session usually lasts between 45 minutes and I hour, during which time, the recipient may experience heat, or become aware of tingling or pulsing sensations, as the healing Reiki energy radiates from the therapist’s hands and begins to effect positive change, and restore balance, throughout the recipient’s whole being. The therapeutic influence of the Reiki treatment continues to manifest for some time after the session ends. For this reason it is desirable (where possible) for the recipient to take things easy for a day or so, in order to gain the full benefits of their Reiki session. How does Reiki work?Reiki works through the channeling of energy from the whole into the levels of your mini void of consciousness. The reiki practitioner has to prepare his or her self to be the empty vessel ie. like a flute, that allows this flow of healing energy to pass through into your levels of being for healing. Energy can be directed to physical ailments, mental illness and emotional traumas. Dis-ease, dis-harmony, un-wellness is believed to occur due to disruptions/inhibitions in the flow of vital life force within our being. These blockages stop you from allowing the force of this healing energy for your own self healing, but one can learn the art of Reiki Healing as well. Contact us for more details or book your session and experience the wonders of this ancient art of energy healing. Many believe that the specific radiant energy-pattern which we call Reiki, emanating from the practitioner’s hands, simply assists the body to correct and re- balance the flow of our life force, thus returning us to a state of wellness and generally enhancing the quality of our experience of our life.Benefits of Reiki HealingReiki is an ancient yet simple healing technique. It has been found to produce profound results all through gentle touch, positive mindsets, and energy transfer. Whether you want to receive Reiki for emotional trauma healing, energy level balancing, or to develop yourself spiritually, Reiki has endless advantages. Here are 10 benefits of Reiki Healing that may interest you.

Promote Harmony & Balance

Reiki takes a non-invasive approach to energy transfer that is extremely effective in promoting overall wellness. Through the energy transfer, the body is able to restore balance across all systems of the mind, body, and spirit. This creates harmony and allows people to continue in a positive lifestyle.

Relaxes and Releases Tension From The Body

What many people love the most about Reiki is that it allows them to simply “be”. It is a couple of minutes of pure relaxation where the receiver can clear their heads and release the tension and stress of their day. The energy transfer through Reiki may make people feel peaceful, relaxed, and lighter which allows then to be in touch with their inner selves and reflect clearly on their lives.

Breaks Down Energy Blocks and Balances The Mind, Body, and Spirit

Regular Reiki treatment promotes the consistent and unlocked flow of energy throughout the body. This allows people to feel less stress, enhances learning and memory, promotes mental clarity, and physical healing/ less physical pain. When energy passageways are blocked, positive energy cannot flow to certain parts of the body, which results in mood swings, fear, anger, pain, and more. Reiki can help keep these passages clear.

Cleanses Body of Toxins and Supports Immune System

Reiki technique is used to remind our bodies how to go back into the “repair” or “self-healing” state of rest and digest. By triggering this state, our bodies begin to cleanse themselves of useless energies. It also allows the body to protect itself from exhaustion, burnout, or immune system failure.

Clears The Mind and Improves Focus

Reiki reminds receivers to be in the present moment. The positive energy transfer allows the mind to focus on current events, not hold onto past mistakes, and not fret on anxieties about the future. This will help with accepting how life is unfolding and will help promote positive reactions to situations, people, and circumstances.

Helps You Sleep Better

You can always expect to feel extremely relaxed after a Reiki session. This kind of relaxation helps our bodies to sleep better, to heal better, and to think more clearly. It is not uncommon for people to fall asleep entirely during a Reiki Session.

Helps Spiritual Growth and Emotional Cleansing

Reiki addresses the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—not just the physical being. This means that the positive energy transfer through Reiki is extremely helpful in elevating the receiver’s mood and general attitude towards life. The healing that starts from within will reflect on their decisions and perspective on the outside.

Accelerates The Body’s Self-Healing Ability

Reiki balances your internal body levels to return to a near-natural state. This means that your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, circulation, and other bodily systems will improve. This normal balance will allow your body to heal itself from within.
There are many ways that an individual can benefit from Reiki. It is important to note that Reiki does not target one particular problem within the body but rather targets everything at once. Energy transfer is the most powerful tool in healing in this way as it heals all related elements of a particular condition.*References from mindsetfirst and the internet.About KarenKaren has been offering her healing services for over 17 years. “The word panchamahabhuta is made up of three words: ‘pancha’, ‘maha’ and ‘bhuta’. ‘Pancha’ means five, ‘maha’ means great and ‘bhuta’ means that which exists. All the living and non-living objects in the universe are made up of panchamahabhuta. Therefore, panchamahabhuta are the five fundamental elements responsible for creation of the universe, including humans. Each individual has a unique panchabhautik constitution. This constitution remains in state of equilibrium in health and any imbalance results in disease. Everything in nature is made up of five basic elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. Knowledge of the five elements allows the yogi to understand the laws of nature and to use yoga to attain greater health, power, knowledge, wisdom and happiness. This arises out of deep intuition of how the universe operates.

Knowledge of the five elements is an essential pre-requisite for more advanced yoga practice because the elements form the world we live in and the structure of our body-mind. All yoga practices work on the five elements, whether we know it or not. Knowledge of the elements (tattwas) is also the basis of yoga therapy and of Ayurveda, traditional Indian medicine. Through consciously working with the elements, we learn how to attain and maintain health and also how to consciously enjoy a long and fulfilling life based on higher awareness.

The States of Matter

Each of the five elements represents a state of matter. Earth is not just soil, but it is everything in nature that is solid. Water is everything that is liquid. Air is everything that is a gas.

Fire is that part of Nature that transforms one state of matter into another. For example, fire transforms the solid state of water (ice) into liquid water and then into its gaseous state (steam). Withdrawing fire recreates the solid state. Fire is worshipped in many yogic and Tantric rituals because it is the means by which we can purify, empower, and control the other states of matter.

Space is the mother of the other elements. The experience of space as luminous emptiness is the basis of higher spiritual experiences.

Relationships between the Elements

Each of the five elements has a certain relationship with the other elements, based on their nature. These relationships form the laws of nature. Some elements are enemies, in that each blocks the expression of the other. Fire and water, for example, will “destroy” each other if they get the chance. In order to co-exist fire and water need to be separated.. Too much fire in the body will create inflammation, while too much water can dampen fire and cause indigestion.

Some elements are said to “love” each other in that they are supportive and nurturing of each other. Earth and water love to “hug” each other, and air and fire increase each other.

Other elements are simply friendly and cooperative. For example, water and air can live together without problems, as in soda water; but when the chance occurs, they separate. The same occurs with fire and earth.

The Elements in the Body

Each element is responsible for different structures in the body. Earth forms solid structures, such as bones, flesh, skin, tissues, and hair. Water forms saliva, urine, semen, blood, and sweat. Fire forms hunger, thirst, and sleep. Air is responsible for all movement, including expansion, contraction, and suppression. Space forms physical attraction and repulsion, as well as fear.

If any element is impure or out of balance with another, disease and suffering may occur. Yoga helps us purify these elements and restore balance and health, and to unfold the inner powers and abilities contained in each element. In fact, yoga is one of the most powerful ways to restore health because it gives us the means to bring even those elements that are natural enemies into harmonious relationships with each other.

Using the Elements to Purify and Rebalance the body

We can use the water, fire, and air elements to purify all the elements of the body.

Fire and air are the most commonly used elements to purify the body-mind. Water is also used in some of the cleansing practices of hatha yoga, the shatkarmas, to remove excessive mucous (water) and digestive acid (fire).

Using fire to purify and balance

Fire is a powerful cleanser, burning up impurities. asanas can be used to regulate the fire element. Dynamic asanas invoking movement, grace, and flow tend to increase fire in the body. This will burn out toxins from the other elements: earth, water and air. For example, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (HYP) states that Matsyendrasana and Paschimottanasana can increase the digestive fire to such an incredible capacity that they can remove diseases. Static poses tend to be more cooling and stabilizing, slowing the metabolic fire.

A balanced sequence of asana that includes some movement and some stillness allows us to regulate fire as well as to harmonize the earth and air elements, two natural enemies. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika states in Chapter 1, Sutra 17, that “Asana gives one steadiness (firmness) of body and mind, lightness (flexibility) of the limbs, and absence of disease.” That is, the steadiness of earth and the lightness of air can be alchemically blended through proper use of asana, even though they are natural enemies.

Using air to purify and balance

Of all the elements, air is perhaps the most powerful to cleanse the body of toxins. This is partially because it fans the fire in our body-mind. It is also because air is prana, the life force. When it is made to circulate through the body and the other elements, it automatically purifies us. Teaching the proper use of breath during asana and incorporating Pranayama practice into our daily routine increases both our lightness and our inner power.

Certain pranayama techniques can be used to identify where imbalances lie in the elements of the body, and to consciously rebalance these.

One of the best ways of doing this is to learn the natural order of the elements in the body. Earth and water are at the base, below the navel, fire is in the middle of the torso; air and space reside in the upper body. Maintaining awareness of this when we practice asana, pranayama and meditation aids the proper distribution of the energy into the elements. As the prana moves up and down in the body, we awaken certain parts of the body with consciousness and energy, coaxing the elements into balance.

The practices of how to balance the 5 elements through pranayama is taught systematically on our digital academy which you can access user courses.

Knowledge of the five elements is the essential to higher yogic and tantric practices.

“There are many ways to do five elements healing in the comfort of your own home. The method described here is drawn from different schools of yoga and tantra, and includes one of the many techniques for inner purification.

Sit in a comfortable meditation posture, with your head, neck, and trunk in a straight line. Close your eyes and focus your attention at the muladhara chakra, the abode of the earth element, at the base of the spine. Visualize a yellow square surrounded by four petals. In the center of this yellow square, visualize the kundalini in the form of a sleeping serpent. Its body is as brilliant as a thousand flashes of lightning.

Now create a root lock by squeezing the anus muscles and pulling them upward. Allow your mind to reach the central point in the region of the root lock. While mentally repeating the sound “hum,” feel as though you are awakening the dormant kundalini shakti. Then mentally repeat “lam,” the bija (seed) mantra of the earth element, not less than sixteen times, while focusing your mind on the kundalini shakti that resides at the muladhara.

Next, visualize the kundalini awakening and traveling upward until it reaches the svadhishthana chakra, the abode of the water element, just above the root of the genitals. There, visualize an ocean-blue circle with a white crescent moon in the center. The circle is surrounded by six petals. While you maintain this image, mentally repeat the bija mantra of the water element, “vam,” not less than sixteen times.

Now visualize the kundalini traveling upward toward the manipura chakra, the abode of fire, at the navel center. Here, visualize a red triangle pointing upward. This triangle is enclosed in a circle of ten petals. Mentally repeat the bija mantra of the fire element, “ram,” not less than sixteen times.

Continue to move with the upward-traveling kundalini until you reach the anahata, the heart center, which is the abode of air. Here, visualize two smoky-gray triangles, one superimposed upon the other, encircled by a twelve-petaled lotus. In the center visualize jiva, the individual soul, in the form of a flame. At this stage mentally repeat the bija mantra of the air element, “yam,” not less than sixteen times.

Buddha_Shuddhi_Practice-2f45fb7901800bea84689f1daf7b5cb0.jpg

Next, visualize the kundalini shakti, in which the individual consciousness has dissolved, traveling upward until it reaches the vishuddha chakra, the abode of ether at the base of the throat. There, a sky-blue circle is surrounded by a sixteen-petaled lotus. The presiding force of this chakra is contained in the bija mantra of the space (or ether) element, “hum,” which you mentally repeat not less than sixteen times.

Now visualize the upward-traveling kundalini shakti reaching the ajña chakra, the center between the eyebrows. This is the realm of mind. This chakra consists of a yellow triangle surrounded by a circle. A bright white flame is enclosed in the triangle. Outside the circle are two petals. Mentally repeat the mantra “so hum.”

Still moving upward with the kundalini shakti, reach the sahasrara chakra, the thousand-petaled crown center which is the abode of the primordial spiritual master—pure consciousness.

At this center all colors, forms, and shapes dissolve, for this chakra is beyond the realm of mind and therefore beyond the realm of imagination. When you experience this center, it consists of countless rays of white light. However, it is most often visualized as a thousand-petaled lotus with a pinkish aura so that the mind can conceive of it. Here repeat the mantra “hamsah.”

Keeping your consciousness at the sahasrara chakra, begin three cycles of pranayama. These pranayama cycles require you to retain your breath after the inhalation—normally the breath is retained four times longer than the inhalation and twice as long as the exhalation. If you have not yet mastered breath retention but still want to do this practice, retain your breath only to your comfortable capacity and disregard the ratios given here.

THE FIRST CYCLE OF BHUTA SHUDDHI

Close the right nostril and inhale deeply through the left nostril while mentally repeating “yam,” the bija mantra of air, sixteen times. Then close both nostrils and retain the breath. While holding the breath, repeat “yam” sixty-four times. Then, while closing the left nostril, exhale slowly through the right nostril, repeating the mantra thirty-two times.

While inhaling during this cycle, visualize a smoky color in the left nostril. During retention, imagine that your whole heart region is filled with the air element, drying up all the toxins and impurities in the body.

THE SECOND CYCLE OF BHUTA SHUDDHI

Close the left nostril and inhale through the right nostril while mentally repeating the bija mantra of the fire element, “ram,” sixteen times. Close both nostrils and retain the breath while repeating “ram” sixty-four times. Then close the right nostril and slowly exhale through the left nostril, repeating the mantra thirty-two times.

During this second cycle visualize a bright, flame-like light in the right nostril during the inhalation. While retaining the breath, imagine this light consuming the impurities dried up during the first cycle. During exhalation, visualize the light as emanating from the heart region and exiting through the left nostril, taking all impurities with it.

THE THIRD CYCLE OF BHUTA SHUDDHI

Close the right nostril and inhale through the left while mentally repeating “vam,” the bija mantra of nectar (also the seed mantra of water), sixteen times. After completing the inhalation, retain the breath and concentrate on the ajña chakra, feeling the nectar showering from this chakra in the form of all the mantras you have employed (they carry the subtle power of the divine force), and filling your body. During retention, repeat the mantra “vam” sixty-four times. Then exhale through the right nostril, repeating the mantra thirty-two times. When you have finished these three cycles of pranayama, let your consciousness descend toward the lower chakras. Remember, the kundalini shakti has swallowed all the elements, energies, and issues associated with each of the chakras as it traveled upward. Now, as it travels downward, those elements and energies re-emerge, purified by the kundalini shakti. The mind is left at the ajña chakra; the space element is left at the throat; individual consciousness and the air element return to the heart; the fire returns to the navel center; water returns to the pelvic center; and the earth element returns to the base of the spine. Finally, the kundalini shakti rests again at the muladhara chakra.

THE REALM BEYOND

The type of bhuta shuddhi practice just described comes from kundalini yoga. Its purpose is to help you make a smooth transition from general yoga practices to more advanced disciplines. Generally this process takes place only in the imagination, but when a competent master bestows shaktipata (the direct transmission of spiritual energy), then the kundalini is actually awakened and bhuta shuddhi becomes a living experience. The student who receives shaktipata transcends all sense of solidity and weight as the kundalini rises above the muladhara center, and at the same time such a student also attains freedom from fear of death, insecurity, and anxiety. When the kundalini rises above the ajña chakra all thoughts vanish, and the mind is left behind. What remains is only the awareness of pure consciousness.

According to the scriptures, attaining a direct experience of pure consciousness takes a long time. Shaktipata—the direct transmission from master to student—is the quickest and surest way. However, it is better to practice bhuta shuddhi sincerely and to your fullest capacity than to wait passively for a realized master to bestow shaktipata. Such masters are rare, and even if an aspirant finds one, few students are prepared to receive such a high degree of initiation. Self-effort is the force that draws divine grace and moves the guru spirit to light the spark that may result in shaktipata”

“Ayurveda has gifted us with some of the most beautiful and magical ways of healing that were preached and followed by our ancestors for centuries. Pechoti therapy or the belly button therapy is one of those forgotten methods that has attracted a lot of attention in recent times for its immediate effects. The belly button is a part of our body that is mostly forgotten. It is one of the most important part of our body that connected a growing fetus/baby to its mother, delivering essentials such as oxygen and nutrients while also removing waste toxins is considered as nothing but as a body part to depict beauty. The concept of Nabhi Sutra was born to Mrs Swati Vakharia, a mother who was facing a new health condition each day during her pregnancy days. In the quest of finding 100% herbal treatments to help her fight her hair fall, she came across this age-old Ayurvedic treatment method that amazed her. The pechoti therapy method was simple to follow, all-natural, side-effect free, and very effective. So, with a little research and the help of Dr Nikunj Mewada, Swati Vakharia formulated a number of herbal essential oils that held the power to treat almost all everyday health issues such as digestion problems, menstrual pain, cough and cold, hair fall, acne, joint pain, and more. The easy application method makes the product one of the most loved herbal therapeutic methods of all time. You simply have to rub 3 drops of Nabhi sutra oil in your belly button every night before you go to sleep. The oil removes the bacteria and dirt from your navel and reopens your nerves, this treating your health conditions from the core of your body.

Ayurveda is an intricate and detailed science which provides great insight into the importance of every part of the body. One of the most commonly overlooked parts, which is not thought to be too important according to western medicine, is the belly button or “nabhi”. The belly button is an important marma point according to Ayurveda for a number of reasons. The most important is that the belly button is the first point of contact from the mother to the baby, and provides the foetus with all necessary nutrients for healthy growth. When the baby is born, the umbilical cord is cut off, resulting in the knobby belly button. However, this point is still one of the most vital points which possesses great significance in helping maintain health.

healthy growth.FACTS ABOUT THE NABHI

  • The nabhi, or belly button has the thinnest layer of muscle between the inner vagus nerve and the outer layer of skin. Skin is extremely thin here, meaning any stimulation directly reaches the brain.
  • The navel is a ‘power hub’ of nerves with over 72,000 nerve endings which makes it vital to look after it.
  • The belly button is the location of agni according to Ayurveda. This controls digestion, urination, and formation processes. Therefore, therapy for the navel helps regulate these bodily functions as well.
  • There is a flourishing microbiome within the navel, which is often home to a number of good bacteria and is an indicator of health and immunity.
  • The nabhi is one of the 3 most vital points of marma, which has an abundance of nerve endings and can help promote better digestion, circulation, mental stimulation and, even improve vision.

CARE FOR THE NAVEL

Due to the importance of the navel in boosting health, it is important to take good care of it.

  • Wash your belly button thoroughly with mild soap and water daily when you shower.
  • Since the nabhi is the point of the solar plexus, regular yoga, pranayama can help increase the size of the solar plexus which in turns promotes better health.
  • Gently massaging the belly button is another great way to stimulate all the nerves in the region. Using your thumb, apply a little pressure on the nabhi, hold for 5 seconds and release. Breathe slowly as you do this. Repeat this a few times every day.

OILING THE NAVEL

ayurvedic practice Applying a few drops of oil and massaging it into and around the navel every night before you sleep is a great way to attain great results. Depending on the results you wish to see, you can use different oils. This is a natural way to heal the body without any side effects. However, it is essential to be consistent and patient in order to see results. Below is a list of a few oils and the ways they can help.

  • Almond oil – helps attain glowing skin
  • Mustard oil – helps cure chapped lips, relieves headaches and improves vision
  • Ghee/ Butter – helps to make skin soft, supple and well hydrated
  • Neem oil – helps cure acne and rashes from the skin
  • Olive oil – helps relieve back aches, stomach aches and improves digestion

This is a simple ayurvedic practice which produces miraculous results when done regularly.

The confluence of classical dance, music, painting and literary traditions is evident in the theme of love, highlighting the Indian philosophy of life and creativity. Kamasastra played an important role in the development of Sanskrit kavya literature in which erotic sentiment, Sringara is one of the main Rasas to be evoked by the poet. Bharata Muni, in Natyasastra, has given a unique classification of the Nayikas or heroines based on their age, basic character, personality, relationship with lover and various stages of love. Similar is his analysis of Nayakas or heroes and other characters.

In the chapter, ‘Harmonious Representation,’ Ashta Nayikas or eight kinds of heroines are described. They are — one dressed up for union (vasakasajja), one distressed by separation (virahotkanthita), one having her husband in control (svadhinabhatrka), one separated by a quarrel (kalahantarita), one enraged (khandita), one deceived (vipralabdha), one with the sojourning husband (proshitabhatrka) and one who boldly moves (to her lover) (abhisarika). This theory reveals the innate understanding of the fundamental bodily humours — the alchemic tri-doshas of vata, kapha and pitta — which is also the basis for Ayurveda.

All matter is composed of five basic elements — panchamahabhutas — which inhere the properties of earth (pritvi), water (jala), fire (tejas), wind (vayu) and space (akasha). The subtlest is space and grossest is earth with every perceptive sense. The body structure is made up of five elements, but the functional aspect is governed by three biological humours. Ether and air together constitute vata; fire and water make up pitta and water and earth create kapha.

Within each person the doshas are continually interacting and with nature. This is why people possess a variety of differences in behaviour and vary in response to environment due to psycho-physio changes. Vata, pitta and kapha are distinctly present in every individual and express themselves according to predominance of the Gunas or qualities of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. Satvva, characterised by consciousness and clarity, is pure, free from disease and calm. It is responsible for the perception of knowledge. Rajas, the most active, has motion, stimulation and desires; ambitions and fickle-mindedness are a result. Tamas is characterised by disturbances in perception and activities of the mind; delusion, false knowledge, laziness, apathy and indolence are due to it. In Natya, the Sattva Guna is something invisible; but it gives support to psychological states and sentiments by means of horripilation, tears and similar other signs displayed in proper places and in harmony with the sentiments.

Erotic Sringara

The histrionic representation with an exuberant sattva is superior, the one with the levelled sattva is medium, and that with no sattva is inferior. Natya Sastragives three kinds of Erotic Sringara associated with the Purusharthas of Kama, Artha and Dharma with associations of emotions like anger and energy as well. Sangitaratnakara, the treatise on musicology by Sarangadeva with the last chapter dedicated to dance called Nartanadhyaya, is considered an authoritative medieval text, around the middle of the 13th century. It gives a beautiful study of Sringara with the three sub-divisions of Bhakti, Rati and Sneha. Bhakti (devotion) and Sneha (affection) are only varieties of Love or Rati between men, free of erotic sentiment, says Sarangadeva. The topic on Satvika bhavas gives the necessary philosophical edge to his text.

He uses the word Stambha — stupefaction — as a similar expression for the aesthetic experience. When, by moods like love, one’s consciousness is modified and gets identified with the soul, Prana would identify with the body and a state of stupefaction is produced. This way, produced by the determinants (Vibhavas), which are relished and indicated by the consequent emotions (Anubhavas) such as stupefaction, these internal states or Satvika Bhavas shine forth in the soul on which consciousness has been super-imposed. They are called so as they rest in Sattva or the vital breath.

There is a beautiful exposition of the vital breath or Prana emanating from the elements and their respective perceptive senses. Sarangadeva shows an uncanny depth in tracing the flow of breath or energy from the earth, to water, to fire, to wind and to space and also vice versa. He directly associates Stambha with breath based on earth or Dhara, Ashru (tears) with breath based on water or Jala, Vaivarnya (change of colour) and Sveda (perspiration) from that based on fire or Teja and Pralaya (unconsciousness) from that based on ether (Akasha).

When Prana or breath is independent, it indicates Romancha (horripilation), Vepathu (trembling) and Svarabheda (change of voice) respectively, depending on whether it is weak, medium or strong. This way Sarangadeva implies that Prana Vayu moves up and down in an aesthetic journey. He says that external traits of stupefaction, etc., are not easily produced in the case of great people with a steady breath but is obvious in the ordinary.

INTRODUCTION TO CRYSTALS

Brief History of Crystals

The use of crystals as an energy manipulator during the Golden Age was very likely not a development from that era, 10,000 to 4,000 B.C., but was a form of technology inherited from a culture far older — the culture of Atlantis, which was destroyed during the polar shift and magnetic reversal 12,000 years ago.

In the older Atlantean civilization, crystals were used quite extensively, and misused to such a degree that they eventually led to the catastrophe which caused Atlantis to disappear into the ocean. Our chief sources of information comes from a number of psychics, who have described for us, each in their own way, yet in strikingly similar depictions, the Atlantean technology of crystal power.

A modern Hindu sage and seer, Lama-Sing, offers us this overview of the forgotten crystal technology:-

“The Atlanteans used the knowledge of the crystal refraction, amplification and storage. It is known that a beam of light directed intensely and focused specifically on certain series of facets in a gem will, when it exits from the reflective plane of the gem, be amplified rather than diminished. And further, these amplified energies were broken down into a wide and sophisticated spectrum. The Atlanteans used the spectrum of this energy so as to be more usable, and for a specific purpose, much as one would use petroleum in terms of its various spectrum limitations for specific purposes.

Extracting this and that and other things from the same basic substance, they used certain divisions of the energy for growing things. Others for healing, others for knowledge or of substance. Other phases of spectrum for disassembling molecular structures, and yet other combinations of these strata for building, assembling structures, as in chains; or producing matter, transmutation of matter and that sort. Their basic technology is still available in the earth plane in various locations.

When it is proper and when it is in accord with God’s will you shall have it again. But with it will come a burden of spiritual decision and needed growth. Man cannot have hate, hostility, and anxiety within his being. He must replace this with love, tranquility, compassion and patience. For at the time these knowledge are recovered, man will have many of the so-called secrets towards the creation, and conversely the destruction of matter.

Crystals have the ability to transfer energy, to retain it, to maintain its intensity, to focus and transmit it over great distance to similar receivers as are equal or comparable to the transmitter.

Thus, from one pyramid to another the Atlanteans, in a sense, transmitted energy. That when the face of the earth, as it is called, was directed toward a certain point one pyramid would function to intensify and transmit energies to other pyramids which would then act as receiving devices and would disperse energy as it was needed. The opposite would be true, when that pyramid was at unfocusable point to their celestial alignment the others would transmit to those. Very simple method, very effective method. Though it brought them many difficulties later. “

In 1981, Revered Dr. Frank Alper, founder of the Arizona Metaphysical Society, channeled a series of readings dealing with life in ancient Atlantis, and that civilization’s use of crystals for everyday purposes. Some of the major points revealed in the readings were these: The Atlantean crystals were natural forms, but their growths were speeded up. Some specimens of clear quartz were produced to almost 25 feet high and 10 feet in diameter, had 12 sides and were used for storing and transmitting power. Each had totally flawless and polished surfaces, so that there would be an undisturbed flow of energies through them from one crystal pole to the other.

Small crystals, four to five feet high, were infused with different colors, and had a variety number of facets, to be used for different purposes, such as healing, meditation, psychic development, increasing mental capacity, communications, powering generators dematerialization, and transport of objects, magnetic force fields, and travel at speeds undreamed of by our culture today.

A number of crystals were shaped into inverted pyramids, with four to six sides, were infused with various shades of pin or rose, which created a light beam for surgery, by changing molecular structure, and for soothing pain, particularly in the delicate areas of the brain, the eyes, the heart and reproductive organs.

Gold or yellow crystals changed colors to deeper hues in the presence of disease or bodily vibration disorders.

Ruby and purple stones helped cure emotional and spiritual problems; and black crystals, no longer in existence, were powerful protectors.

For general rejuvenation and a return of vitality the ancient Atlanteans periodically meditated 15 to 20 minutes inside a circle of 6, 11, 22 or 24 stones of different types, holding a clear quartz in their hands, which acted as a control and focalizes.

All these various crystals received their power from a variety of sources, including the Sun, the Earth’s energy grid system, or from each other.

The larger stones, called Fire Crystals, were the central receiving and broadcasting stations, while others acted as receivers for individual cities, buildings, vehicles and homes. On a higher spiritual level, rooms made of crystals were places where the Initiates left their bodies in the Final Transcendence, often never to return.

In the modern Bermuda Triangle, on the ocean bottom where the ruins of Atlantis now exist, the energy built up in the sunken and damaged Fire Crystals can periodically trigger dematerializations of anything in the area.

In this excerpt from the readings, Alper gives details of how the ancient crystal systems worked, for protecting and energizing a large metropolis:

“Around the perimeter of the city of Orax, were placed several thousand crystals, elongated in shape and hexagonal on the sides. They served as the grounding points for this magnetic dome. Through these crystals was generated the magnetic field that protected the city. The power to these crystals was generated from the central core which was exactly in the center of the city. The power of the core was conducted to the crystals on the perimeter through a system of copper rods. These rods lead from the center core to each of the crystals in perimeter. From these rods, dissecting the diameter of the city, there were many thou sands of points where the energy could be drawn off to supply power necessary for other functions and uses. These rods were placed approximately six feet beneath the surface of the ground and also served to make the earth quite fertile to produce food and vegetation. ‘When entry into the city was desired by a visiting ship, the power to one or two of the crystals was lowered to create an opening in the magnetic field to allow for the entry of the ship. If this was not done, the ship would have crashed, for it could not have penetrated the force field.”

One of the most detailed descriptions of the Atlantean use of a mysterious instrument called the Great Crystal was given by the famed psychic of Virginia Beach, Edgar Cayce. In the numerous trance readings he gave over a five decade period, Cayce alluded to the Atlantean Great Crystal time and time again, and a compilation of his words form a fascinating picture. The Crystal, he said, was housed in a special building oval in shape, with a dome that could be rolled back, exposing the Crystal to the light of the sun, moon and stars at the most favorable times.

The interior of the building was lined with non-conducting metal or stone, similar to asbestos or bakelite, a thermosetting plastic. The Crystal itself, which Cayce also called the Tuaoi Stone, or Firestone, was huge in size, cylindrical in length, and   prismatic in shape, cut with six sides. Atop the Crystal was a moveable capstone, used to both concentrate incoming rays of energy, and to direct currents to various parts of the Atlantean countryside.

It appears the Crystal gathered solar, lunar, stellar, atmospheric and Earth energies as well as unknown elemental forces and concentrated these at a specific point, located between the top of the Crystal and the bottom of the capstone. The psychic also alluded to the fact that the Crystal became hot when in operation; it employed inducted methods; utilized a kind of wave energy other than electromagnetic; and it melted an invisible beam of energy that could pass through water and solid matter.

The energy of the Crystal was used for various purposes, in different periods of Atlantean history. In the beginning, about 50,000 years ago, the Great Crystal was operated exclusively by the Initiates, or those spiritually advanced enough to handle such a tremendous source of power. At first, the energies were used as a means of communication between ‘the finite and the ‘Infinite’ — an oracle that at this remote period in history, the Crystal was the development of a prehistoric Wisdom which, as in the later Golden Age, recognised that all energies in the universe are but aspects of one energy, and one Mind.

There are, as were set in the beginning, as far as the concern is of this physical earth plane, those rules or laws in the relative force of those that govern the earth, and the beings of the earth plane, and also that same law governs the planets, starts , constellations, groups, that constitute the sphere, the space in which the planet moves. These are of one force, and we see the manifestations of the relation of one force with another in the many various phases as is shown.

As the peoples (of early Atlantis) were a peaceful peoples, their developments took on rather that form — with the developing into the physical material bodies — of the fast development, or to the using of the elements about them to their own use; recognizing themselves to be a part of that about them. That spirit that uses matter, that uses every influence in the earth’s environ for the glory of the Creative Forces, partakes of and is a part of the Universal Consciousness.’

As time progressed, however, the Atlantean civilization matured further, the Crystal’s energies were also utilized in rejuvenating the human body. By it, the Atlanteans were able to live hundreds of years, yet always maintain a youthful appearance. As  technology advanced in Atlantis, the energies of the Crystal were put to a wider variety of material uses. Cayce spoke of the Crystal’s force acting upon certain ‘instruments’ which in turn operated ‘various modes of travel through induction methods.’

Currents of energy were transmitted throughout the land, like radio waves, and powered by these, crafts and vehicles traversed the land, through the sky and under the sea at the speed of sound. By utilization of other currents originating form the Crystal, the Atlanteans were also able to transmit over great distances the human voice, the pictures, like modern television.

In the same manner, even heat and light could be directed to specific buildings or open arenas, giving illumination and warmth by seemingly invisible means.

Toward the end of their existence, however, the Atlanteans became greedier for more power, the operation of the Crystal was taken over by those of less spiritual fortitude, and the energies of the Great Crystal were tuned to higher and more destructive frequencies.

Finally, the Crystal was tuned too high, activating volcanoes and melting mountains, ultimately causing the submergence of Atlantis, and perhaps even the axis shift of the Earth itself. In one reading, the psychic describes specifically how the Crystal energies were directed into the Earth, overloading the Earth energy grid system.

“When there were those destructive forces brought through the creating of the high influences of the earth”. John H. Sutton, a NASA researcher involved with applications of low energy plasmas, believes that the Great Crystal Cayce was describing was a ‘laser-fusion reactor/gravity wave generator.’ He suggests that when intense gravity waves were generated by the Crystal and beamed into the Earth, the planet’s crystalline quartz, which occurs in granite rock as high as 25 percent throughout the crust, absorbed the energy and the resulting melt-down of large masses of subterranean quartz would have been the triggering mechanism for causing major slippage along the Earth’s fault-lines, destroying Atlantis and precipitating a global shift.

Interestingly, Cayce stipulated further that knowledge of the Great Crystal, its design and construction, and instructions on its operations and uses, will one day be found hidden in three different locations — in the sunken ruins of Atlantis near modern Bimini in the Bahamas, in the Hall of Records buried near the Sphinx in Egypt, and in the lost Temple of Iltar yet to be fully explored in modern Yucatan.

In one reading given in December 1933, the psychic revealed that crude models of the Crystal were at the time already being discovered in Central America, by members of the Pennsylvania State Museum. What he was referring to were excavations being carried out from 1931 to 1938, by E.R. Johnson of the Museum, at the site of Piedras Negras (‘Place of Black Stones’), in Guatemala. The site was a Mayan Old Empire center, and is distinguished by a number of large, intricately carved stone stelae or commemorative standing monuments. There were also curious circular, table-like stones, also carved with scenes and pictographs.

Cayce observed that the stone models “are set in the front of the temple, between the service temple and the outer court temple, or the priest activity, in the alter that stood before the door of the tabernacle. This alter or stone, the stands between the activities of the priest. For of course, this is degenerated from the original use and purpose, but is the nearest and closest one to be found.”

Furthermore, the psychic claimed, still other portions of the Crystal models are to be found in museums in both Washington and Chicago. However, Cayce stressed the identification of the models or clues as to their function will not be found without a   ‘transformation’ having occurred on a personal, spiritual level. “For as given, do not confuse self and those about self. Not that this should be sought. Not that information may not be asked for, but be sure that the records are read — and those that have been given may only be read by those who have cleansed or purified themselves.”

Another psychic who has received information on the mysterious power source of the Atlanteans is Washington columnist and author Ruth Montgomery. Like Cayce, Montgomery learned that the ancient Atlanteans used an advanced energy created by what her spirit guides called the Great Crystal. Ages ago, the Atlanteans had discovered a huge vein of quartz, and after careful shaping and etching facets into the crystalline surface, a gem was finally created that collected every ray of the sun, and transformed it into useful power.

The Atlanteans also built a reflector for it, and housed it in a gigantic domed building with a moveable top, so that the energy could be directed wherever desired. nearby, ‘copper vats’ for storage were constructed, so that the energy was always available. According to Montgomery’s guides, the secret of the Great Crystal was in its carbon structure, which by an unrevealed process was ‘sufficiently powerful enough to raise the level of energy ten thousand times that of any known instrument today.’

The Atlanteans discovered that this ‘broadcast power’ could be used to propel vehicles. The guides claim that the Great Crystal was powerful enough that ‘when directed through the rays of the sun it created sparks so strong that ships would take off from the earth and move in area currents, directed by facets of the Crystal in controlled pattern’ Other vehicles were powered by the same source, which swam beneath the seas.’ In fact, the Great Crystal could ‘drive machines across the heavens and beneath the sea’ practically anywhere in the world. It was also used as an important source of communication.

Montgomery learned the Atlanteans utilized certain Crystal frequencies like a radio and even television. ‘The pictures were viewed on round images,’ the psychic wrote, ‘which projected a ray, and were thrown on walls or any blank surface, so that there w as no need for screens or tubes.’ Montgomery then received these prophetic words: “Within the Crystal lie the secrets that will revolutionize the world, supplying all power needs and energy forces.”

In Egypt, Montgomery was told the Atlanteans built temples that also used the sun’s rays like the Great Crystal, only for the specific purpose of healing. ‘The rays were directed to cubicles where patients stretched out on couches and received the benefit properties without the dangerous ones. What was this unknown healing process? It may one day be used in the treatment of cancer.’

Significantly, a considerable amount of research is being done today in the use of both low power and high power light waves for controlling cancer and skin ailments. In the Soviet Union, light beams with an output of only one three-thousandths that of a household 60 watt bulb have been discovered to stimulate skin rejuvenation, and aid in skin grafting. In Hungary, Germany and Scandinavia, doctors are also successfully experimenting with ‘laser-puncture’ or healing by the projection of light waves on body acupuncture points. And in Denmark, the Finsen Institute of Copenhagen has had remarkable results by giving cancer patients ‘light baths’ of green, blue and ultraviolet spectrum radiations. We are thus beginning to understand the basics of a medical science once far in advance of ours today.

Karen has been offering services of crystal healing for over 17 years. Her techniques involve working with crystals in different ways for the required benefit of the client. The session may include one or many of the below techniques of healing with crystals.

1. Crystal Grids

This would have to be my most favorite way to work with stones.  This is fairly advanced work, but there isn’t anything truly “difficult” about it.  It essentially uses sacred geometry and the process of activating an energy field from stones that are arranged in a type of mandala configuration.

The benefits of this kind of technique is that you can get the energetic effect of a very large specimen with a few or more small pieces.  Also, you can weave together many different energies in a way to create a combination that is supportive of very specific issues.  The activation technique is easy once you learn it and it’s pretty easy to learn it.  Remember doodling daisy flowers when you were a kid?  Yeah, that’s about as hard as the activation technique gets.

The crystal crystals are form in a copper pyramid grid to maximise the healing on all levels of your being.

2. Gem Elixirs

This is the process of imbuing a fluid with the vibrational energies of a rock, then you usually drink it, bathe in it, spray it on yourself, or whatever.  It’s “buzzy water”.

This adds to the energetic intervention required for healing. You may be given a Crystal Gem Elixir that includes vibration of natural herbs to help in the healing process.

The benefits of this technique is that you are almost taking in the vibration like a “medicine”.  It’s a tangibly good way to integrate energy.  You can make a larger blend of several stones, or keep it to single stones.  You buzz up the glass of water you are about to drink down or create a blend that you can preserve and use by the drop.

3. Crystal Divination

This is a grid healing process depending on your required need of healing. A 15 minute Divination process makes up part of your healing session in understanding what is required for your unconscious cleansing and healing.

4. Crystal Healing Treatments

The crystal healing treatment uses crystals to focus on the physical body or the etheric bodies to do healing. This is a non invasive session where you are fully clothed lying down on a therapy bed. Crystals are place on and around your body to maximise the channeling and direction of the vibration force of energy from the crystals. Mantras and/or sound may be used in the session depending on what healing is required.

Samaya Tantra’s meditation and healing hall is surrounded by crystals that infuses healing on all levels of your being.

The role of fire is well known in traditional systems of medicine, which use the great elements of nature for healing purposes. However, one system in particular is built around a profound understanding of our biological fires. This is ‘Ayurveda’, the traditional natural healing system of India, the healing branch of Yoga and Vedic science going back thousands of years to ancient Vedic Rishis like Bharadvaja. Ayurveda means the wisdom (Veda) of life and longevity (Ayur).

Ayurveda is a complete system of natural healing using food, herbs, bodywork, yoga and meditation for both physical and psychological healing. Recognizing consciousness as the primary force in the universe, Ayurveda is a mind-body medicine that considers all of what we do as promoting health or disease, wholeness or fragmentation.

Ayurveda is not simply a physical or even a human-based medicine. It views human health as intimately connected with the well-being of the environment and with the forces of nature, which it recognizes as powers of a greater universal life and consciousness. It recognizes that epidemic diseases –which can destroy entire civilizations — must arise whenever there is significant damage to the land, water, air or seasons, with the damage to the land being the worst of these factors.

In this regard, Ayurveda regards our current civilization out of harmony with nature as a diseased society that must cause health problems on individual, collective and planetary levels. We have created an environmental and ecological propensity to global disease that must manifest unless we change our societal life-styles. Unless there is both an ecological and a spiritual awareness brought into our medical system, it will be unable to deal with the increasing health and environmental threats that are now manifesting all around us.

Signs of blocked core energy center is lethargy, lack of purpose, lack of passion, depression, suicidal and self harm tendencies due to high levels of tamas. For more severe cases a 4 session treatment is recommended once a week. Once a month cleansing is recommended for a balanced core center.

From Yoga and the Sacred Fire: Self-Realization and Planetary Transformation (Lotus Press)

In the Rig Veda, the most ancient Vedic text, life or Ayur is defined as Agni or fire, which is our soul or life-essence. Ayurveda, therefore, is not only a ‘fire medicine’ but a ‘medicine of the soul’. Its definition of well-being is harmony with our inner soul and the soul of the universe, not just absence of physical disease.

If we remember that our lives are a sacred fire, this recognition itself creates a power of awareness that keeps us in harmony with the entire universe. As the soul is the consciousness principle within us, Ayurveda is also a ‘medicine of consciousness’ stating that only what we do with awareness really heals us. All true healing works through the giving of care, love and consciousness. This means that consciousness is the ultimate healing force, the real healing fire.

Ayurveda recognizes fire or Agni on a physical level as the key to all bodily processes from cellular metabolism to perception in the brain, which all involve the burning of energy and the generation of light. It regards the digestive fire or ‘fire in the belly’, called Jatharagni, as the basis of physical health. If the digestive fire is kept burning in a consistent and clean manner, then health is guaranteed; our food is digested properly, our tissues and waste-materials form normally, and there is the necessary internal energy to ward off any pathogens that may attack us from the outside.

Along with the digestive fire, Ayurveda recognizes the ‘life-fire’ or fire of Prana (Pranagni) as the key to healing on an energetic level. If our breath is deep and full, calm and consistent, then our vital force will maintain harmony and balance between all our bodily systems and mental faculties. Our life-fire is a force of nature that can bring us all the healing energies of the universe. It holds the natural intelligence of healing that is responsible for the wonderful intricacy and marvelous order of our organism and its amazing ability to repair itself from injury and disease.  Unless we learn to harness our own fire of healing, how can anything else really help us?

In my own work as an Ayurvedic healer, I always emphasize the role of Agni as the most important factor in health. Putting patients in touch with their different Agnis, showing them how to understand and regulate their internal fires of digestion, breath and mind makes Ayurveda and natural healing very simple and easy to apply. I call this ‘Agni-Ayurveda’, fire Ayurveda or ‘fire-medicine’, which was probably the original Vedic form of Ayurveda.

We can easily assess the state of our digestive fire through the conditions of our appetite, digestion and elimination. We can diagnose our life-fire by how we breathe, by our level of strength, energy and endurance. We can determine the state of the mental fire through noting our acuity of perception, power of reasoning and ability to deal with emotional challenges.  You can check your own signs in this regard:

If your appetite is regular but not excessive, your digestion smooth and elimination regular and, above all, if you have a pleasant breath and no tongue coating, then your digestive fire is functioning at an optimal level.

If your breath is full and deep, without coughing or gasping, if you have good circulation, good strength in your extremities and good resistance to disease, then your life-fire is functioning at an optimal level.

If your senses have good acuity, your reasoning powers are sharp and you are content and at peace with yourself, then your mental fire is functioning at an optimal level.

Noting the condition of these three main biological fires, we can regulate them through diet, herbs, exercise and meditation so that we can manifest the full potential of our lives.

Ayurveda as it is usually applied works to balance the three doshas or biological humors of Vata (that which blows), Pitta (that which cooks) and Kapha (that which sticks). These represent the vital energies of the three elements of air (Vata), fire (Pitta) and water (Kapha) as they both create the physical body and put their distinctive mark on our individual constitution, creating Vata (airy), Pitta (fiery) and Kapha (watery) types of people. Patients follow recommendations of diet and life-style or more specific disease treatments to counter any excess or toxic conditions of the doshas within them.

However, Agni is the main factor behind all three doshas.

VATA or the biological air-humor is the pranic or bioelectrical force that comes forth from Agni.

PITTA or the biological fire-humor is the vital substance, the flammable oil that holds Agni in the body.

KAPHA or the biological water-humor makes up the bulk of our bodily tissues and serves as a container and support for this internal fire.

The three doshas are rooted in Agni and can be treated through it. Vata people need to cultivate a more consistent internal fire to keep Vata, whose energy tends to be erratic, in balance. Pitta people need to keep their fire from getting too high, as it naturally tends to be excessive. Kapha people require a higher internal fire to burn up the excess weight and water that they tend to accumulate.

As we are fire beings possessing a fire body, the regulation of our internal fires is the determinative factor for our happiness and well-being. By learning how to balance our internal fires or Agnis on physical, pranic and psychological levels, we can connect to the deepest level of Agni, the soul in the heart, the flame that sustains all of our biological fires. This not only facilitates health but also opens the wellsprings of creativity and aids in rejuvenation.

Fire and Disease

As fire creatures, most of our diseases are born out of cold that prevents our inner fires from burning fully. Cold reduces our digestive power, weakens our vitality, inhibits our movement, impairs our circulation and causes pain. An increase of cold can be caused by exposure to the elements, by wrong diet, by overwork, by the aging process and by other factors that wear down our fire.

However, diseases can arise from excess fire as well, such as conditions of heat, inflammation and bleeding in which we have overly elevated or improperly burning internal fires. There are also unhealthy fires born of poorly digested food or the accumulation of toxins which produce the ‘smoke’ or ‘ash’ of disease. In such conditions our fires need to be purified, regulated and restored to their proper function.

The negative ‘fire of disease’ fights with the positive ‘fire of health’ in the body. We must learn to increase the fire of health and decrease the toxic fire that is seeking to replace it. It is easy to see the difference between these two fires. The fire of health gives clarity to the mind, luster to the skin, good circulation and good digestion; the fire of disease results in emotional agitation, poor complexion, poor circulation and poor digestion.

To counter imbalance, whether due to cold or to toxic fire, we must promote the fire of healing. Our inner fires have a healing potential, a ‘fire of healing’ that can overcome all diseases. This arises through the natural effort of our internal fires to protect our organism and restore its internal balance.

Fire both within and around us provides many tools for healing. In various forms as heat, light, energy and color, it is the main force for healing both the body and mind. Fire, we could say, is our main natural healer. It is not our therapies or our medicines that really bring about healing. These are at best vehicles for the healing fire. The therapist is also not the source of healing, but functions mainly as a form of fire or a fire priest, providing warmth, guidance and comfort.

A true doctor should be able to access the wisdom of fire to help balance our bodily fires. He must both know the laws of fire as well as how to work with the healing tools of fire. Above all, he must be able to take the role of the sacred fire in treating others. The true healer must become Agni as both an organic and spiritual force.

Why does Samaya Tantra offer this treatment?

Like the core of the earth that resonates with fire or the sun that illuminates the universe with its magnificence so too, do each one of us hold this power within the core center situated at the Solar Plexus, the Void of Consciousness. This space is the entry point of the soul into the feotus that is connected to the womb through the umbilical cord which is the seat of Sushumna Nadi.

Through cleansing, healing and rejuvenating this core through Agni healing (using the fire element) and Tantric energy movement, we open up this channel to access our void of consciousness in communion with our soul for higher experiences of consciousness and for our own awakening. The secondary benefits to the body and it’s required healing promotes a balanced being.

The Void of Consciousness includes our entire world perception of all that is required to understand for our awakening. The physical body can hold blockages that transmit from mental attachments and emotional traumas and as such affect the channel and flow of energy through the body. Like any machine ensuring the core engine operates and functions effectively, so too do we take care of our core center and the energy flow directed from this.

Shirodhara comes from the two Sanskrit words “shiro” (head) and “dhara” (flow). It’s an Ayurvedic healing technique that involves having someone pour liquid — usually oil, milk, buttermilk, or water — onto your forehead. It’s often combined with a body, scalp, or head massage.

Ayurveda is a holistic health approach that originated in India thousands of years ago. It focuses on rebalancing the life forces, called doshas, within your body. From a TPT perspective, there should be alignment of the levels of being for awakening however we hold so much karmic debt in our unconscious that this alignment is not possible without some understanding and acceptance of our emotional and causal traumas.

Potential benefits :
Shirodhara is said to have relaxing, soothing, and calming effects on the body and mind. Research also suggests that shirodhara may help:

  • improve sleep quality
  • manage insomnia
  • lessen anxiety
  • reduce stress
  • awaken senses
  • heightened awareness
  • stillness and centredness
  • calmness and inner silence

At the start of the appointment, you’ll be asked to lie on your back and relax. Next, the practitioner will heat up the liquid so it roughly matches your body temperature and place it in a bowl. They may hold the bowl over your head or use a stand. Either way, the liquid will gently drip through a small hole in the bottom of the bowl, landing between your eyebrows. Your eyes will be covered with a lightweight barrier for protection. The whole process generally lasts anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. It might involve a massage before or after the treatment. By adding our Tantric processes to this treatment we elevate the experience from the body into the unconscious mind, allowing you during this process to access and release potential traumas stored in your unconscious mind.

Liquid options

Please let us know if you are allergic or sensitive to any oils. Sesame oil is widely used because it’s a relatively neutral oil and mixes well with essential oils, which are sometimes used to enhance the experience.

Essential Oils that might be used:
A few drops of Neem Oil
or a few drops of White Sage Oil

and depending on your assessment rosemary, neem oil or lavender herbs may be included in the mix

Other oils that might be used include:

  • sesame oil
  • neem oil
  • coconut oil
  • ksheerabala oil
  • mahanarayan oil
  • clarified butter (ghee)
Safety

Shirodhara is pretty safe. If you have extra-sensitive skin, you might also want to ask about doing a patch test with the liquid first, just to make sure it won’t cause any irritation. If you have any cuts or open wounds, especially on your face, it’s best to hold off on trying shirodhara until they heal.

Ayurvedic bodywork is an ancient and powerful tool for bringing body, mind, and soul into harmonious balance. While traditional Swedish massage works primarily on the physical level, Ayurvedic bodywork address multiple layers of your being. From exfoliating dead skin cells, moving lymphatic fluids, and erasing muscular tension to balancing doshic elements, dissolving ama (toxic residue in the body and mind), and mitigating the stress response, Ayurvedic treatments have a long history of facilitating physical health, emotional well-being, and soul connection.

Numerous treatments exist under the umbrella of Ayurvedic bodywork. When signing up, treatments are inclusive of the retreat program or if you have booked for a one on one session, the treatment is selected based upon your goals, state of health, and Vikruti (doshic imbalance). Most often, a series of three to six treatments is recommended to detoxify the body and rejuvenate the mind. However, there are several stand-alone treatments that are powerful enough to offer measurable benefits with a single session. Shirodhara is one such example.

The word shirodhara originates from two Sanskrit words, shiro (head) and dhara(flow). It is a form of treatment in which warm, herbalized Ayurvedic oil is poured onto your forehead. Initially, the oil is streamed in dosha-specific patterns from the right to left temple. After several minutes, the stream is set to the middle of the forehead where it flows continuously for the duration of the treatment. The oil pour lasts approximately 30 minutes and is preceded by a full-body srota or abhyangha massage, both of which include cranial activation and scalp manipulation.

While there is no doubt that the shirodhara treatment is soothing, there are also five distinct shirodhara therapy benefits.

1. Counteracts the Effects of Stress

The benefits of shirodhara kick off as an ideal treatment for reducing high levels of mental stress. It induces calmness, promotes tranquility, and facilitates relaxation. The steady pour of warm oil encourages what cardiologist and founder of Harvard’s Mind/Body Medical Institute, Dr. Herbert Benson, termed the relaxation response. As your body enters deep relaxation, stress hormones decline while hyper-alert brain patterns (beta waves) transition into relaxed-alert ones (alpha waves). Dr. Benson described the relaxation response as the body’s way of turning on the parasympathetic nervous system, that part of the nervous system which conserves energy, slows heart rate, and relaxes muscles. One (small) study showed that the shirodhara treatment significantly impacts those measurable markers of relaxation by decreasing respiration rate, reducing diastolic blood pressure, and slowing heart rate.

Given that nearly every modern disease has some link to stress, minimizing its deleterious impact is a valuable tool for generating lifelong heath. The relaxation response directly counteracts stress by reversing its physical equivalents. A single one-hour session of shirodhara treatment may invoke such a powerful relaxation response that the effects of stress can be mitigated for hours, or even days.

2. Reduces Anxiety

As brainwaves have been shown to synchronize with external stimuli, the gentle, repetitive stimulation to the center of the forehead is the likely mechanism by which the shirodhara treatment reduces anxiety. As the warm oil streams onto the center of the forehead, it activates a powerful Ayurvedic energy point known as ajna marma. This same physical point is known in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as yin tang and belongs to a category of acupuncture points termed extraordinary points, or those which stand on their own. In both the Ayurvedic and TCM models, activation of the point between the eyebrows is said to relieve anxiety and agitation. Fortunately, in this case, no needles are required! The shirodhara stimulates the powerful energy point in the forehead, thus working to dispel anxiety.

One study involving shirodhara treatments concluded that, “The relaxed alert state, after Shirodhara, was co-related with an increase in alpha rhythm in EEG.” The alpha rhythm is the brain pattern associated with a decrease in anxiety and an increase in serenity. It is no surprise that shirodhara has long been prescribed by Ayurvedic doctors for treating generalized and specific anxiety disorders.

3. Awakens Intuition

The point between the eyebrows is known in many spiritual traditions as the “third eye.” Buddhists consider the third eye to be the seat of spiritual awakening. Hindus call it the sixth chakra, home of intuition. Taoists think of it as the “heavenly eye.” Regardless of the name by which it is referred to, stimulation of the point between the eyebrows has a long history of association with accessing subtler realms. As the third eye opens, life force—or prana—begins to flow freely. As the prana flows throughout the energy channels, known as srotas, these channels are cleaned and blockages removed. Just as flushing long stagnant water pipes in a home would push out debris, as the energetic pipes are flushed, physical and emotional blockages are removed.

As impalpable as the world of energy healing may seem, it can lead to tangible effects. Some recipients of the shirodhara treatment have recalled events buried deep in their past and seen them from a vantage point previously inaccessible. The mental clarity these guests have experienced has enabled them to move through unresolved traumas, pains, and emotional issues. Other guests have reported greater decisiveness around impending decisions. Still others have experienced increased spiritual awareness and a newfound connection to their higher selves.

4. Improves Sleep Quality

Whether from a cup of coffee sipped too late in the day or an upcoming deadline at work, most people have experienced the effects of occasional sleep loss. The exhaustion and lethargy following a single night of unsuccessful sleep can feel debilitating. Yet, when sleep quality is constantly compromised, not only do you feel languid, but physical and emotional health are undermined. For decades, a mainstream solution has been sleep medications, each with their own host of unflattering side effects. However, some patients battling insomnia look to the ancient practices of Ayurvedic medicine.

An international team of researchers from the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland investigated the activity in the brains of individuals with insomnia during both waking and sleep states. What they found was that people with the sleep disorder showed less powerful alpha-wave activity and more powerful beta-wave activity at all times. In other words, the brains of individuals with chronic insomnia never relaxed.

The shirodhara treatment has been shown to reduce brain waves to the more relaxed alpha state. It thus stands to reason that this treatment could have a beneficial impact on sleep quality. A small pilot study performed by Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine confirmed just that. The study found the shirodhara treatment to be a viable option “to improve sleep quality and quality of life in persons with sleep problems.” Not only was sleep quality improved with the shirodhara, but the only side effect was increased health!

5. Pacifies Vata Dosha

The Vata dosha is a combination of the elements air and space. When Vataaccumulates in your constitution it can lead to physical restlessness, chaotic thoughts, scattered attention, and forgetfulness. In Ayurvedic circles, the shirodhara treatment is known as one of the most effective means of pacifying excessive Vata. The warmth, weight, and steadiness of the oil pour balance the cool, light, and fluctuating nature of the Vata dosha.

While the shirodhara treatment is a beneficial adjunct to a comprehensive Ayurvedic wellness plan, it is an equally powerful stand-alone treatment. Whether you are looking to address a specific ailment or simply hoping to turn down the volume of the external world for an hour, shirodhara therapy benefits offer a relaxing approach to your wellness goals.

FAQ: How often should one have their Chakras Balanced?

You will be equipped with key techniques of balancing your energy centers in the comfort of your home. Think of Vibrational Healing as a healthy maintenance for the body, mind and emotions. Doing a session once a month can help in ensuring your prana is maintain in the positive polarity and any stresses from the weeks prior are cleansed and re-balanced for maximum success in your daily life’s activities and especially for your sadhana practices.

Seven Life-Force Energy Centers

As described in The Perennial Truth Book the retreat includes a group healing session on how to cleanse and rejuvenate the seven realms of your main energy portals, this is combined with the Chakra Balancing of the energy centers on all three levels of being.

A person can collect energy from several different levels of vibrations–including color–that are utilized in various parts of the body. Throughout our body we have main energy centers, which are connected to major organs or glands that govern other body parts. Each of these main energy centers are referred to as chakra–chakra is a Sanskrit word which means wheel. A chakra is a wheel-like spinning vortex that whirls in a circular motion forming a vacuum in the center that draws in anything it encounters on its particular vibratory level.

It is said that our body contains hundreds of chakras that are the key to the operation of our being. These “spinning wheels” draw-in coded information from our surroundings. Coded information can be anything from a color vibration to ultra-violet ray to a radio or micro wave to another person’s aura. In essence our chakras receive the health of our environment, including the people we are in contact with (that’s why other people’s moods have an affect on us!). As well our chakras also radiate an energy of vibration.

It is also believed that we have seven main chakra centers and that each main center is connected to our being on several different levels: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. On the physical level each chakra governs a main organ or gland, which is then connected to other body parts that resonate the same frequency.

Every organ, gland and body system is connected to a chakra and each chakra is connected to a color vibrational frequency. For example, the heart chakra governs the thymus gland and it is also in charge of the functioning of the heart organ, lungs, bronchia system, lymph glands, secondary circulatory system, immune system as well as the arm and hands. And the heart chakra resonates to the color green.

The seven main chakra centers are aligned along the spinal column. If there are disturbances on any level, this shows in the chakra’s vitality level. Also each of the seven main chakras is their own intelligence center. This means that each chakra is not only associated with our physical health but also controls aspects connected to our emotional, mental and belief system.

To help balance a chakra–whether on an emotional, intellectual, physical or spiritual level–we need to bring in the chakra (color) vibration, which resonates at the same frequency.

In the study of the anatomy of the aura it is important to understand the significance of the chakra system and the language of colors expressed in the aura.

When one part of a chakra center is out of sync it may eventually effect its other parts and possibly its neighboring chakra. When a chakra center is out of balance it generally means that it is over-active or under-active, or possibly congested or blocked. If this happens it is usually felt on a mental, emotional or physical level.

The sixth and seventh element being ether
